Stagonolepis was a quadruped, covered with thick armored scales running the length of his body. Moving slowly, he would have used this heavy armor to repel the attacks of contemporary carnivores. Stagonolepis had a very small head for its size: it represents less than 10% of the total body length. He had no teeth in the front of his jaw, but a sort of arched beak. This would have allowed him to uproot the plants in a manner similar to a current pig. The teeth at the back of his mouth would have been adapted to chew hard vegetation, such as horsetails, ferns and cycads recently appeared
