Aetosaurus was a small primitive aetosaurus. Unlike the more derived aetosaurs such as Desmatosuchus, the carapace was long and narrow and showed no spikes. The paramedian scales that covered the back of the body (with one row on each side of the vertebrae) are much wider than long. He is also more straightened than these bigger cousins, which allows him to run faster to escape his predators.
